England's World Cup prospects after Thomas Tuchel's first Wembley defeat...
England suffered a 1-0 defeat to Japan in their final friendly before the World Cup squad announcement. Kaoru Mitoma's 23rd-minute goal was the difference, marking England's first-ever loss to an Asian country. The match was played in front of a sold-out crowd at Wembley Stadium.
Japan's win stretched their unbeaten run to five matches, and they looked the more threatening side. England's head coach, Thomas Tuchel, fielded a strong lineup, having previously experimented with an alternative XI in a 1-1 draw with Uruguay. This match was seen as a chance for Tuchel to fine-tune his team before announcing the World Cup squad.
England's captain and all-time record goalscorer, Harry Kane, was a notable absentee due to a minor training injury. As a result, Marc Guehi led the team for the first time, showcasing his skills with a header and a blocked shot in the 13th minute, following an England corner that created chaos in the Japan box.
Japan's counter-attacking strategy paid off as they took the lead through Kaoru Mitoma's brilliant goal. Mitoma dispossessed Cole Palmer, moved the ball to Keito Nakamura, and then received a return pass in the box, finishing first-time for his ninth international goal. This was also the first goal Jordan Pickford had conceded in an England shirt since October 2024.
England's attack was lackluster, barely testing Japan's goalkeeper Zion Suzuki until the 34th minute. Elliot Anderson's curling shot was the first real test, with Suzuki making a spectacular save to tip it onto the crossbar. Japan's Ayase Ueda almost capitalized on England's sluggish start, hitting the crossbar with a deflected effort just before halftime.
Japan's Samurai Blue kept pressuring England after halftime, and Ritsu Dōan almost capitalized on a mistake by Nico O’Reilly five minutes into the second half, but Pickford made a crucial save. Thomas Tuchel made a bold move, substituting four players just before the hour mark: Jarrod Bowen, Lewis Hall, Dominic Solanke, and Tino Livramento came on for Cole Palmer, Ben White, Phil Foden, and O’Reilly.
England's substitutions didn't pay off immediately, as Japan's Keito Nakamura had a great chance, cutting inside and curling the ball just past the far post.
Marcus Rashford came on for Anthony Gordon and had a chance to level the game, but Zion Suzuki saved his low effort. The rebound was sent wide by Jarrod Bowen, and England's pressure continued with Harry Maguire's header cleared off the line by Yukinari Sugawara. Morgan Rogers also had a chance, but his shot flew over the bar.
England ended their final friendly before the World Cup on a sour note, failing to score for the first time since June 2024. Thomas Tuchel suffered his first Wembley defeat as England boss, unable to get the Three Lions' attack firing.
Japan, on the other hand, is looking sharp ahead of their eighth successive World Cup. They capped off a great run with a 1-0 win over Scotland on Saturday, completing a home nations double.
