Italy vs Bosnia World Cup playoff...

Italy missed out on the World Cup again. They drew 1-1 with Bosnia & Herzegovina, who won the playoff on penalties, securing their first World Cup appearance in 12 years.

In the intense atmosphere of Zenica, Bosnia had the first chance, with Erdin Demirovic's shot being held by Gianluigi Donnarumma

Bosnia's goalkeeper, Nikola Vasilj, had a nightmare moment when he gifted the ball to Nicolò Barella just outside the box. Barella squared it to Moise Kean, who finished superbly, curling it home with his instep to give Italy the lead.

This goal came just 15 minutes into the game, and it was a great start for the Azzurri.

Bosnia didn't give up, they came back strong! Ivan Basic had Gianluigi Donnarumma on his toes with a shot from outside the box, while Nikola Katic had a chance to score from a header but didn't quite nail it. The pressure kept building as Demirović's header from a free-kick went just wide.

Italy was already struggling despite their 1-0 lead, and things got worse just before halftime when Alessandro Bastoni was sent off for a reckless tackle on Amar Memić. Bosnia seized the opportunity, and coach Sergej Barbarez made a double substitution at halftime, introducing Kerim Alajbegovic, who promptly tested Gianluigi Donnarumma.

The match was intense, with Bosnia pushing hard for an equalizer.

Despite Italy's defensive struggles, they nearly doubled their lead on the hour mark. Bosnia's sloppy possession in midfield allowed Moise Kean to surge towards goal, but the Fiorentina forward's one-on-one chance with Nikola Vasilj ended in a miss, as he blazed the ball over.

Bosnia was dominating the game, and it was like they were ahead on points in a boxing match. Then, on the 70th minute, Gianluigi Donnarumma made an incredible save, diving low to his right to tip Benjamin Tahirovic's shot around the post. It was one of his best saves of the night, and Italy managed to hold on despite the pressure.

Italy thought they had held on, but Bosnia's pressure paid off. Gianluigi Donnarumma made a great save from Edin Dzeko's header, but Haris Tabakovic pounced on the rebound, forcing the ball over the line for a deserved equalizer with just over 10 minutes left.

The game was heading for extra time, and the first half was a tense affair. There was controversy when Marco Palestra was brought down by Tarek Muharemovic, but referee Clément Turpin only gave a yellow card, leaving Italy fuming.

After the free-kick was recycled out right, Palestra picked out Sebastiano Esposito at the back post but he was denied well by Vasilj. The best chance of the second half of ET came when Tahirović fizzed a low shot wide, meaning that a shoot-out would decide who would be going to North America this summer and who would be watching at home.

The tension was palpable as the teams headed for penalties.

The intense atmosphere at Bilino Polje Stadium got the better of Italy, as Sebastiano Esposito missed their first penalty kick. Bosnia, on the other hand, was clinical, scoring their first three spot kicks with ease. Bryan Cristante then hit the crossbar, leaving Italy's World Cup hopes hanging by a thread. Esmir Bajraktarević's decisive penalty sealed Bosnia's spot in the World Cup, sparking wild celebrations across the stadium.
