US Open: Pegula Beats Krejcikova, Reaches Semifinals

Jessica Pegula cruises into US Open semifinals with dominant win

US Open quarterfinal: Jessica Pegula beats Barbora Krejcikova 6-3, 6-3, setting up a semifinal matchup with the winner of Sabalenka vs. Vondrousova.

“It's pretty crazy, and it's something 10 years ago I never thought I'd be good at this...”

American tennis star Jessica Pegula cruised into the US Open semifinals with a dominant 6-3, 6-3 win over two-time Grand Slam champion Barbora Krejcikova. This marks Pegula's second consecutive semifinal appearance at the US Open, showcasing her growth and consistency in major tournaments.

Pegula's victory was marked by her exceptional gameplay, where she fired off 17 winners and demonstrated solid serving, converting five of her nine break points. In contrast, Krejcikova struggled with unforced errors, registering 24 mistakes compared to Pegula's 20. The match concluded in under 90 minutes, highlighting Pegula's efficiency and focus on the court.

Throughout the tournament, Pegula has shown remarkable form, losing only 23 games, the fewest by an American woman advancing to a major semifinal since Serena Williams in 2016. Her confidence has grown, allowing her to take charge of matches and assert her dominance. Pegula expressed her comfort playing significant matches against elite competitors, stating, “It's pretty crazy, and it's something 10 years ago I never thought I'd be good at this.”

Barbora Krejcikova showed remarkable resilience earlier this year, overcoming injuries to return to form. Her determination paid off in the fourth round, where she saved eight match points to secure a thrilling win and advance to the quarterfinals. However, her momentum waned in the quarterfinal match against Jessica Pegula, the 2024 US Open runner-up, resulting in a straight-sets loss.

Jessica Pegula expressed her growing comfort and confidence in her game, saying, “I feel like I'm just really comfortable. It's pretty crazy... 10 years ago I never thought I'd be good at this (and reach the final stages of a slam) but I guess I am.” Her confidence has been building, and she's now a formidable opponent in major tournaments.

Krejcikova faced challenges during the match, including missing an overhead shot in the second game. She was visibly struggling with fatigue, rubbing her eyes repeatedly as she battled through the match. The physical toll of back-to-back three-set matches seemed to catch up with her, ultimately leading to her loss against Pegula, who capitalized on Krejcikova's double fault to break her serve

The match saw a series of breaks, with Krejcikova breaking back when Pegula's backhand went into the net in the seventh game. However, Krejcikova quickly lost her advantage, handing it back to Pegula by getting broken again.

Pegula began the second set on a strong note, breaking Krejcikova to love with a precise backhand winner down the line in the opening game. This set the tone for the rest of the set, as Pegula's momentum continued to build.

Barbora Krejcikova's first US Open quarterfinal in four years didn't quite go as planned. She found herself trailing 4-1 against Jessica Pegula, with the American securing a double break due to Krejcikova's unforced errors. Despite a brief resurgence, Krejcikova's momentum waned, and she struggled to keep pace with Pegula's consistent gameplay.

As the match progressed, Krejcikova's fatigue became apparent. Having saved eight match points in her previous thriller against Taylor Townsend, Krejcikova seemed to run out of gas against Pegula. The Czech player's unforced errors continued to pile up, ultimately sealing her fate in the match. Pegula, meanwhile, maintained her composure, firing off 17 winners to secure a 6-3, 6-3 victory and advance to the semifinals.

Two double faults in the final game sealed Krejcikova's fate, capping off a tough day on the court. In contrast, Pegula was overjoyed, basking in the cheers of the enthusiastic crowd at Arthur Ashe Stadium after securing her dominant victory.
