Bayern Munich's Jamal Musiala is targeting a competitive comeback later this year after suffering a serious injury in July. The 22-year-old Germany international broke his leg and ankle during the Club World Cup quarter-final match against Paris Saint-Germain in Atlanta, where he collided with goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma. Despite the severity of the injury, Musiala is confident he'll return to the pitch this year.
Musiala sustained a fibula fracture with a broken and dislocated ankle, which will likely keep him sidelined for several months. The injury occurred during the first half of the match, forcing Vincent Kompany to bring on Serge Gnabry as a substitute. Musiala's recovery process has been underway, with him undergoing rehabilitation at Bayern Munich's Säbener Straße training base.
As a key player for Bayern Munich and the German national team, Musiala's injury is a significant blow to his team's chances. However, his determination to return to the pitch later this year is a positive sign for fans and teammates alike. His participation in the 2026 World Cup is crucial for Germany's hopes, and a successful recovery would be a major boost.
“The leg is progressing well and healing according to plan,” Musiala told SportBild magazine. “I do not need crutches any more but I don't want to rush things. I will take the necessary time.”
“I don't want to set a specific date. But given the progress I have made so far I want to be playing competitive matches with Bayern in 2025,” he added.

Bayern Munich's Jamal Musiala is focusing on his recovery after suffering a serious leg injury during the Club World Cup quarter-final match against Paris Saint-Germain. Musiala, who had an impressive last season with 21 goals and eight assists in all competitions, helping Bayern win the Bundesliga title, collided with PSG goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma and broke his ankle.
The 22-year-old Germany international has been ruled out for at least four months due to a fractured fibula and will undergo surgery. Despite the severity of the injury, Musiala isn't placing blame on Donnarumma, acknowledging that such incidents are part of the game. “Mentally the first few weeks were not easy for me,” Musiala admitted. “But there is no point in being constantly frustrated about the situation.”
Musiala is optimistic about his return, stating that his leg is “progressing well and healing according to plan.” He's aiming to make a competitive comeback with Bayern in 2025, although he doesn't want to rush his recovery.
