Stuttgart Open Upsets: Zverev and Engel Shine

Alexander Zverev and Felix Auger-Aliassime advanced to the Stuttgart Open quarterfinals, while wildcard Justin Engel pulled off a stunning upset, becoming the youngest player to reach an ATP grass-court quarterfinal since Boris Becker in 1985.

Stuttgart Open: Zverev Advances
Home favorite Alexander Zverev defeated French opponent Corentin Moutet 6-2, 7-6(7) to reach the Stuttgart Open quarterfinals.

The 28-year-old German top seed is fine-tuning for Wimbledon, where he has struggled, never advancing beyond the fourth round, and remains without a grass-court title despite 24 tour-level wins.

Alexander Zverev, a three-time Grand Slam finalist, dominated the first set against Corentin Moutet, winning 6-2.

The second set was a different story, with Moutet responding well to take an early 2-1 lead. However, the set intensified as both players traded breaks, reaching a nail-biting 4-4 score. Ultimately, Zverev held his nerve in the tiebreak, winning 7-6(7) to secure the match in 1 hour and 50 minutes.

“I prefer to win 6-2 6-2, but you can never choose these kind of things but in the end I won and that's the most important thing,” said Zverev, who last played at Stuttgart in 2019.

“I think the first match on grass was never easy. I honestly think it was a very average match. I made it complicated, but a win is a win and I'm happy to play tomorrow again.”

Stuttgart Open: Auger-Aliassime Advances

Fourth seed Felix Auger-Aliassime secured his first grass-court win since 2022, defeating Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard 6-4, 6-4 to reach the Stuttgart Open quarterfinals.

The 24-year-old Canadian will next face German teenager Justin Engel.

Wildcard Justin Engel pulled off a major upset, defeating seventh seed Alex Michelsen 6-4, 6-4 to reach the Stuttgart Open quarterfinals.

The 17-year-old German sensation broke Michelsen for a 2-1 lead in both sets and held serve without facing a break point, becoming the youngest Stuttgart quarterfinalist and the youngest player to reach an ATP grass-court quarterfinal since Boris Becker at Wimbledon in 1985.
