UNC Releases Details of Bill Belichick's 5-Year, $50 Million Contract

The University of North Carolina has released the details of Bill Belichick's contract, which includes a $10 million annual salary and bonuses for football and academic success.

The University of North Carolina has released the details of Bill Belichick's contract, which will see the renowned coach earn $10 million per year as the head of the football program. The 29-page contract, made public on Thursday, outlines the terms of Belichick's five-year deal, which is only guaranteed for the first three seasons. If Belichick chooses to opt out before June 1st, amidst rumors of potential NFL team interests, he will be required to pay the school $10 million. After the first season, the opt-out fee decreases to $1 million.

The contract also includes provisions that allow the school to terminate Belichick's employment without pay, starting from January 1, 2028, during the final two years of the deal. However, the contract also includes a range of bonuses that could significantly increase Belichick's earnings. One such bonus is tied to the team's academic performance, with Belichick set to earn $50,000 if the team achieves a certain grade-point average, increasing as the team's cumulative GPA rises.

In addition to academic bonuses, Belichick will also receive a range of perks, including a car, a pass to the Chapel Hill Country Club, a suite at all home and away games, and $100,000 in relocation fees. On the football side, Belichick will earn bonuses for achieving specific milestones, including $150,000 for an eight-win season, with the potential to earn an additional $500,000 for each win beyond eight. He will also receive $300,000 for winning the ACC, $750,000 for making the College Football Playoffs, and $1 million for reaching the CFP quarterfinals.

Belichick's contract also includes provisions for additional bonuses if the team advances further in the playoffs. For example, he will earn $250,000 for each game won during and after the quarterfinals. Even if the Tar Heels do not win the championship, simply making the College Football Playoff will earn Belichick an additional $1.75 million. These bonuses provide a significant incentive for Belichick to succeed in his new role and bring success to the University of North Carolina's football program.
