Rep Opposes FG Using Imports To Stimulate The Economy

THE House of Representatives member for Osun State's Ifelodun/Boripe/Odo-Otin federal constituency, Hon. Soji Adetunji, has urged the federal government to impose import bans in order to stimulate the Nigerian economy.

He went on to criticize the usage of foreign money, particularly the dollar, in the nation and demanded that the Federal Government acknowledge the use of naira as a means of promoting the expansion of local economies.

The legislator made the claims during an empowerment session for a portion of his constituents in Osun State's Ifelodun/Odo-Otin Boripe federal constituency. Approximately #10 million was distributed to a select group of PDP supporters in the area.

Adetunji claimed that if Nigeria can transition to a productive economy, the economic suffering it is currently experiencing will end. He claimed that the nation's excessive reliance on imports is ruining its economy.

“The federal government should discourage importation of goods into the country because, the importation of goods kills the country's economy.

“The federal government should encourage production of goods in the country, in order to grow Nigeria's economy. Nigeria allows certain things which other countries don't allow. For instance cryptocurrency that thrives in Nigeria is not allowed on some country of the world.”

Adetunji stated that the welfare of his people came first while discussing the food and cash that were provided to his residents as palliatives to help them deal with the country's current economic distress.

However, he made hints that he had lately obtained UTME forms for a limited group of the constituency's pupils and that he had awarded scholarships to a few chosen kids, particularly the impoverished ones.

Adetunji responded to the tragic deaths of 17 soldiers in Delta State by saying that the federal government must provide the security services with all the assistance they need in order to reduce nationwide insecurity.

The federal legislator called for the required steps to find the attackers and referred to the attackers' actions as barbarous.

In reference to the naira's appreciation versus the dollar, Adetunji stated that certain monetary policies implemented by the federal government were already showing encouraging outcomes.

He urged Nigerians to assist the government in combating criminal activity, pointing out that the country's security condition has improved.

He said, “I'm not saying the insecurity in the country has stopped but the situation has improved.

“The killing of our soldiers is barbaric. No matter how provoked you are, aside from God, these are the people that we have to protect us. I didn't expect a civilian to do what they did.

“We need more arms for our security personnel. I'm going to move a motion in the house soon, compelling the Federal Government to give the necessary and maximum support to our security personnel.”

Adetunji stated that certain of the federal government's monetary measures were already having a favorable impact on the naira's value relative to the dollar.

He stated that some foreign goods should be outlawed by the federal government and urged people to buy domestically produced goods.

“When the new regime came in, the situation was worse but when it put some monetary policy in place, the naira is gaining value back.

“We are not a producing country. We don't export anything. So, we don't earn FX from abroad. We consume, we don't produce. That was what caused most of these things. Also, we allowed things in our economy that foreign countries won't allow.

“There are still a lot of things the federal government need to ban and we need to engage in export to earn FX which would make prices of things go down.”
