Chicago boy, 11, Dies Protecting Mom From Ex-boyfriend Day After He Was Released

An 11-year-old Chicago child was fatally murdered while attempting to shield his pregnant mother from her recently released ex-boyfriend.

According to NBC, a 37-year-old man named Crosetti Brand has been charged with killing an 11-year-old child and assaulting his mother, who is eight months pregnant, during a domestic violence incident in Chicago's Edgewater neighborhood.

Crosetti Brand is now charged with first-degree murder, armed robbery, house invasion with a deadly weapon, aggravated domestic assault, and violating an order of protection, among other crimes, according to police, who released unsettling details of what transpired on Friday.

According to Chicago police, he was taken into custody on Wednesday afternoon. He made his initial court appearance on Friday. In the courtroom, family members charged at Brand trying to get through the court barriers to get to him. They had to be escorted out of the courtroom and out of the George N. Leighton Criminal Courthouse altogether, though they were not held in contempt of court.

Brand was recently released from jail on Tuesday, March 12. He had previously served a 16-year sentence for home invasion and aggravated assault and was paroled in October, but he was sent back to prison for violating his parole in February after sending the female victim a text and showing up at her home, according to authorities. A judge ordered Brand to be held behind bars. CBS 2 reported that Brand has a violent history of domestic abuse.

“He entered the home of the family and took the life of an innocent 11-year-old boy, the boy's mother was stabbed multiple times and she had an order of protection against the offender,” said CPD Supt. Larry Snelling. “Her 5-year-old son was also present and witnessed the attack.”

The incident took place in the 5900 block of North Ravenswood on Wednesday morning at around eight a.m. When police arrived to the Peterson Plaza apartments on Wednesday morning, they discovered two victims inside one of the units: an 11-year-old child who had sustained a chest injury and a 33-year-old lady who had sustained multiple body stab wounds.

Police and the Cook County Medical Examiner's office later stated the boy was 11 years old and named him as Jayden Perkins. Initially, authorities said the child was 10 years old. The infant did not survive, but the couple was rushed to a nearby hospital. The woman's condition was listed as critical. On Thursday night, there was a sizable vigil for Jayden.

RIP Champ
