Sweden Names Stina Blackstenius as Captain for World Cup Qualifiers Amid Injury Concerns
Sweden appoints Stina Blackstenius as captain for World Cup qualifiers against Denmark and Serbia, as Kosovare Asllani and Nathalie Bjorn are ruled out due to injuries. Johanna Rytting Kaneryd's participation is also in doubt due to a calf injury.

Stina Blackstenius has been named captain of Sweden's national team for the upcoming 2027 World Cup qualifiers against Denmark and Serbia. This comes as a result of regular captain Kosovare Asllani's absence due to cruciate ligament surgery, and vice-captain Nathalie Bjorn's injury.
There's also doubt surrounding Johanna Rytting Kaneryd's participation, although her status hasn't been officially confirmed. Blackstenius, who plays for Arsenal, has been in top form, scoring seven goals in the Women's Super League this season.
Tony Gustavsson has appointed 30-year-old Blackstenius as captain for Sweden's upcoming home games against Denmark and Serbia. The matches are scheduled to take place in Gothenburg on April 14th and Solna four days later.
“A very experienced player who knows what it means to play important matches, and who is always herself both on and off the field,” Gustavsson said, praising Blackstenius's leadership qualities.
Sweden's experience will be put to the test after a mixed start to their campaign. They began with a 1-0 win away to Italy, but followed it up with a tough 0-0 draw in Serbia.
Second in Group A1, Sweden needs points at home, especially against leaders Denmark, to secure an automatic qualifying spot. The upcoming matches are crucial for their chances.
The pressure of leadership isn't solely on one player, according to Gustavsson. The coach prefers to distribute leadership roles across four main positions on the field, with a designated leader for each.
“The player who wears the armband in each match is the one with the most international caps,” Gustavsson explains. With 125 caps, Blackstenius fits the bill, making her a natural choice for the role.

If Rytting Kaneryd doesn't play, Sweden's squad will be reduced to just five players with 50+ caps for the crucial qualifiers. This highlights the impact of injuries on their experienced lineup. The five players with 50+ caps would be Stina Blackstenius, Kosovare Asllani (injured), Nathalie Bjorn (injured), and two others.
This could affect Sweden's overall team dynamics and experience.
“The information I have received is that right now it is day-to-day. When we get closer to the match and there is a decision, the medical team will inform me. Then we will have to make a decision whether we have to replace her in the squad or if she can sit on the bench,” said Gustavsson.
Keeping key players fit is proving to be a challenge for Sweden. Johanna Rytting Kaneryd has joined the squad, but is yet to train with the team due to a calf injury that sidelined her for Chelsea. This raises doubts about her availability for the upcoming matches.
Her absence could be a blow to Sweden's chances, especially against tough opponents like Denmark.
