Title-chasing Inter thrash Cagliari to go 12 points clear at Serie A summit Chivu’s half-time talk sparks Inter as Nerazzurri go 12 clear with Cagliari rout...

Inter Milan took another step toward the Serie A title after beating Cagliari 3-0 at the San Siro, a result that sent the Nerazzurri 12 points clear at the top of the table.

The hosts were left wondering how they hadn’t broken the deadlock inside the opening 20 minutes.

A counter-attack from Inter saw Marcus Thuram and Francesco Pio Esposito combine well, resulting in a ball across the face of goal that reached Federico Dimarco, but his close-range effort was heroically blocked on the line by Michel Adopo.

It was a frustrating first half overall for Cristian Chivu’s side, as the Nerazzurri were held at bay by a resilient Cagliari defence. With half-time approaching, a superb first touch from Inter’s Esposito put him in prime position to give his team the lead, but he was denied by an impressive save from Isolani goalkeeper Elia Caprile.

Chivu’s team talk clearly had the desired effect, as Inter blew their opponents away in the second half to cruise to victory.

The deadlock was finally broken in the 52nd minute when Thuram finished confidently after an exquisite pass from Dimarco.

With the jubilant home crowd still celebrating the Frenchman’s 11th Serie A goal of the season, there was more to cheer just four minutes later as Nicolo Barella rifled the ball past Caprile to double Inter’s lead in style.

The second goal seemed to completely take the wind out of the visitors, and with the contest already decided, Piotr Zielinski added the finishing touch as his outstanding strike gave the hosts a third goal right at the death.

The win makes it three in a row for Inter as they sit on the brink of Scudetto glory. The Nerazzurri must now turn their focus to the Coppa Italia for their next game, as they host Como in the second leg of their semi-final on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Cagliari stay 16th in Serie A and six points clear of the relegation zone with the run-in fast approaching.
