Valencia's La Liga match against Real Oviedo, scheduled for Monday at 9 PM CET, has been postponed due to a red alert issued by Spain's meteorological agency for heavy rains in the eastern Valencia region. The Spanish football federation (RFEF) announced the postponement just under five hours before kick-off, prioritizing the safety of players, staff and spectators.

The decision to postpone the match was made after considering the severe weather conditions expected in the region. Schools and colleges in Valencia were closed on Monday, and public spaces were also shut down as a precautionary measure. The match is now set to take place on Tuesday, September 30, at 8 PM CET, pending favorable weather conditions.

The postponement is a precautionary measure to avoid any potential risks associated with the heavy rainfall, especially considering the catastrophic flooding that occurred in the Valencia region last October, resulting in 235 deaths. The safety of the approximately 25,000 spectators expected to attend the match from nearby localities was also a concern.

The match between Real Oviedo and Valencia CF at Mestalla stadium has been postponed by a day due to unforeseen circumstances. According to the RFEF, “The game will be played on Tuesday, September 30, at 20:00 (CET, 1900 BST), as long as weather conditions allow.” This change affects the original schedule, which had the match starting at 21:00 CET on Monday.

In October 2024, the Valencia region experienced catastrophic flooding, resulting in approximately 217 deaths, not 235. The devastating floods led to widespread damage, with thousands of homes and businesses affected, and transport links disrupted. As a response, several football matches were postponed, including Valencia's La Liga match against Real Madrid and Villarreal's match against Rayo Vallecano.

The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) agreed to postpone various matches in the Valencian Community due to the severity of the flooding. A minute's silence was held at all Spanish football matches the following weekend to honor the victims of the natural disaster. La Liga also collaborated with the Red Cross to raise money for those affected by the flooding.
