Barcelona to Host Real Sociedad Match at Lluis Companys Olympic Stadium
Barcelona to play Real Sociedad match at Lluis Companys Olympic Stadium after Camp Nou permit request is rejected due to safety concerns.
“The club is currently working on the new amendments that the council has shared today...”
Barcelona's bid to return to Camp Nou for Sunday's LaLiga match against Real Sociedad has been rejected by the city council due to safety and security concerns. The club had hoped to host the match with a reduced capacity of 27,000 spectators, but unfortunately, they failed to secure the necessary permits.
As a result, Barcelona will play their match against Real Sociedad at the Lluis Companys Olympic Stadium in Montjuic, where they've been hosting games during the renovation of Camp Nou. The stadium's renovation, estimated to cost €1.5 billion, is nine months behind schedule, with the roof expected to be completed by summer 2027.
Barcelona has expressed their commitment to resolving the outstanding issues and thanked fans for their understanding. The club will continue working on obtaining the necessary permits to open the stadium soon.
Barcelona has been denied permission to host their La Liga match against Real Sociedad at the Camp Nou stadium due to safety and security concerns. The club will instead play the match at the Lluis Companys Olympic Stadium in Montjuic, where they played during the 2023-24 and 2024-25 seasons while renovations were underway at Camp Nou. Chief of Civil Protection Sebastia Massague stated, “We have spotted different elements that need to be fixed and have an impact in the safety and security of the stadium.”
The renovation of Camp Nou, which began in June 2023, is now nine months behind schedule. Barcelona had hoped to return to the stadium this month, but city officials have cited issues with fire safety and access routes that need to be resolved. The club is currently working on addressing these concerns and obtaining the necessary permits to reopen the stadium.
In the meantime, Barcelona will play their matches at alternative venues. They recently played their home matches at the Estadi Johan Cruyff, but the capacity is limited to 6,000, which is below La Liga's minimum attendance requirement of 8,000. The Lluis Companys Olympic Stadium, with a capacity of 55,926, will host not only the Real Sociedad match but also Barcelona's Champions League group stage match against Paris St Germain on October 1.
Barcelona's LaLiga home campaign kicked off at the Estadi Johan Cruyff, a small stadium with a capacity of 6,000, due to ongoing renovations at Camp Nou and issues with the Lluis Companys pitch after a Post Malone concert. The team played their match against Valencia on September 14, securing a 6-0 win. “The club is currently working on the new amendments that the council has shared today,” Barcelona stated, highlighting their efforts to resolve the stadium situation.

Barcelona has also confirmed that their Champions League group stage match against Paris Saint-Germain on October 1 will take place at the Lluis Companys Olympic Stadium. This decision comes as the club works to obtain the necessary permits for Camp Nou, which is currently undergoing renovations expected to be completed by summer 2026.
In the league standings, Barcelona is currently second, trailing Real Madrid by five points but having played one fewer game. The team has made impressive starts to their matches, including their recent win over Valencia and a 2-1 victory away against Newcastle United in the Champions League.
