Argentina Qualifies for 2026 FIFA World Cup
Argentina becomes first South American team to qualify for 2026 World Cup after Bolivia's draw with Uruguay
Argentina has secured its spot in the 2026 World Cup without even stepping onto the field on Tuesday. The Albiceleste's qualification was confirmed after Bolivia's 0-0 draw with Uruguay in El Alto.
The outcome of the Bolivia-Uruguay match had a direct impact on Argentina's fate. As a result, Argentina's upcoming derby against Brazil, scheduled for later in the day, will have no bearing on their qualification status.
The expanded 2026 World Cup format, which features 48 teams, allows for six direct qualification spots from the South American qualifiers, as well as an additional spot in a playoff tie. Argentina's early qualification is a significant milestone in their campaign.
Argentina has secured its spot in the World Cup with 28 points from 13 games, making it mathematically impossible for Bolivia to catch up. Bolivia currently sits in seventh place with 14 points from 14 games.
As the reigning world champions, Argentina is set to make its 14th consecutive World Cup appearance. The team's streak dates back to 1974, with the last World Cup without Argentina being the 1970 tournament in Mexico, which was won by Brazil.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be hosted jointly by the United States, Mexico, and Canada. The tournament is scheduled to take place from June 11 to July 19, 2026.
Countries Qualified for the 2026 FIFA World Cup:
