Mercedes F1 Driver Andrea Kimi Antonelli Passes Driving Test at 18

Formula 1 rookie Andrea Kimi Antonelli has passed his driving test at 18, ahead of his debut season with Mercedes, where he'll partner George Russell.

Andrea Kimi Antonelli, the 18-year-old Formula 1 rookie, has achieved a significant milestone off the track by passing his driving test. Antonelli, who is set to make his debut with Mercedes this season, shared the news on Instagram with a photo of himself giving a thumbs up in a driving instructor's car, accompanied by the message “mission complete.”

Although Antonelli didn't need a regular driving license to compete in Formula 1, having already obtained the required “Super Licence,” passing his driving test is still a notable achievement. As the new driver for Mercedes, Antonelli will replace seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton, and will partner British driver George Russell, who finished sixth in last year's championship.

Antonelli's journey to becoming a Formula 1 driver has been remarkable, with Mercedes announcing him as their new driver during last year's Italian Grand Prix at Monza. However, his debut in a Formula 1 car was marred by a crash, as he smashed into the trackside barriers during a practice run, completing only four laps. Despite this setback, Antonelli is now poised to make his mark in the world of Formula 1.

As an Italian driver, Antonelli carries the hopes of his nation, which has not seen one of its own win a Grand Prix since Giancarlo Fisichella's victory in 2006. The last Italian to win the drivers' championship was Alberto Ascari in 1953. Antonelli's debut season with Mercedes will be closely watched, as he aims to bring glory back to Italy and make a name for himself in the world of Formula 1.
